Sled Hockey for Players With Mobility Impairments

A short documentary featuring the Devils Youth Sled Hockey Team

In 1999, the parents of a young man with fibrous dysplasia approached us with the idea of starting a sled hockey team for players with mobility impairments.  Their son loved sports, but was unable to participate in traditional programs.  We enthusiastically began to research other sled hockey programs and enlisted the help of paralympian Mike Doyle, who came to West Orange from his home in Doylestown, PA for every practice during those early years of our program.

Although that original player has since moved on to become an internationally-ranked wheelchair tennis player, our sled hockey program has continued to thrive under the leadership of Head Coach Al Graul.  Thanks to a startup grant from the Kessler Foundation, we have so far been able to to offer this unique experience to children with mobility impairments free of charge.
